India totalled a record 414-7 but beat Sri Lanka by just three runs in a sensational ODI which saw the second-highest aggregate of runs scored in a limited overs game. Virender Sehwag smashed 6 sixes and 17 boundaries in his 146 as he and Tendulkar (69) posted 153 for the first wicket. Jesse Ryder smashed the quickest fifty of the tournament (74) with the aid of a runner to help New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 38 runs and boost their semi-final hopes which they can seal with a win over England. Ryder put on 125 with Brendon McCullum (46) to take the Kiwi’s to an imposing 315-7 - their highest ever score against Sri Lanka. Tillakaratne Dilshan’s brutal 106 in just 92 balls helped Sri Lanka to an upset 55-run win over the fancied the home team, South Africa, in the opening match of the Champions Trophy. The in-form opener put on 158 with captain Kumar Sangakkara (54), while a rapid 77 from Mahela Jaywardene took Sri Lanka to 319-8. Skipper Graeme Smith’s 58 gave the hosts a platform, but a devastating Ajantha Mendis spell (3-30) halted proceedings for the hosts at 206-7 when rain ended play.
